This sumptuous volume explores the Cy Twombly Gallery, a single-artist building on the Menil campus in Houston, and the 33 paintings and 11 sculptures the artist chose to place there. It includes numerous large-scale close-ups and insightful essays on the pavilion’s creation. The art of American-born artist Cy Twombly (1928–2011) defies conventional classification. He incorporated a wide variety of elements into his work, from scrawls and calligraphic marks to text from poetry and mythology. Since its opening in 1995, the Renzo Piano–designed gallery devoted to his work has become a pilgrimage destination for the artist’s avid admirers. The product of close collaboration between the Menil, Twombly, and the Dia Center for the Arts, it is one of the most extraordinary presentations of any single 20th-century artist.
