Portraits. Luc Tuymans

Though much has been written about Belgian artist Luc Tuymans (b. 1958) as social provocateur, his catalytic role in history painting’s revival, and the thematic exhibitions of his own art, this catalogue is the first examination of the portrait as an important and variable subject in his work. Tuymans co-curated the exhibition that forms the basis for this publication, placing his portraits in dialogue with related works from Africa, North America, the Pacific Islands, the ancient Mediterranean, and Europe in the Menil Collection. Here, the authors investigate the human likeness as a critical component of the artist’s oeuvre and examine the subject’s larger role in art history as well as document Tuymans’s first North American curatorial venture.

About the Authors

Robert Storr is an art critic, a professor of painting, and the dean of the Yale University School of Art, New Haven, Connecticut. A prolific author of catalogue essays and articles, his books include September: A History Painting by Gerhard Richter (2010) and Elizabeth Murray (2005).

Toby Kamps is former curator of modern and contemporary art at the Menil Collection. He has curated the Wols retrospective co-organized with the Kunsthalle Bremen, Germany (2013), and was co-curator of Silence and co-author of the accompanying catalogue (2012).

Susan Sutton is the director of Ballroom Marfa in Texas and a former curatorial assistant at the Menil Collection. She recently contributed an essay to Byzantine Things in the World (2013).

Clare Elliott is associate research curator at the Menil Collection. She has contributed to several catalogues and was curator and author of Forrest Bess: Seeing Things Invisible (2013).
